The attack on the ministerial housing allowance.
| | As you may know, the ministerial housing allowance was recently ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge. And that puts its future in jeopardy. The judge's decision has been appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the case will likely be heard in the fall. Striking down the housing allowance could bring great financial harm to thousands of pastors and the churches they serve. Countless ministers around the U.S. rely on this tax exemption. This time-honored tradition helps pastors shelter their own families while they are ministering to the communities they serve—often at great financial sacrifice. If this decision is allowed to stand, some pastors, in areas where housing costs are already prohibitive, may have to take a second job, send their spouse to work, or even leave the ministry altogether. This case is one of many that shows the reality that our culture and laws are changing. Like the impact that a negative ruling on the housing allowance would have on pastors, these changes mean more to churches than they may realize. | | Changing times call for a new approach. | Pastors' ability to preach and operate their churches needs focused protection, given these changing times. That's why we are doing something different to prepare and protect churches like yours… | | | | |
