Day 177: Read today's devotional on Bible Gateway.

Not a Single One

Read Joshua 21:1-45

So the Lord gave to Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. And the Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had solemnly promised their ancestors. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the Lord helped them conquer all their enemies. Not a single one of all the good promises the Lord had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; everything he had spoken came true.
(Joshua 21:43-45)

Reflect

God proved faithful in fulfilling every promise he had given to Israel. Some promises took years to fulfill, but "not a single one of all the good promises the Lord had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled."

God will fulfill his promises according to his timetable, not ours, but he will fulfill them. We know that his word is sure. The more we hear about promises God has fulfilled and promises he continues to fulfill, the easier it is to hope for those promises we are still waiting for. Sometimes we become impatient, wanting God to act in a certain way now. Instead, we should faithfully follow through on what he asks us to do and continue to trust him for the future.

Respond

Are there plans you've had and been waiting for God to fulfill? Are they promises from God, or are they your own plans? Is it your timetable, or is it God's? Life with God isn't always easy or fun, but God is good. Even in your waiting, God is at work—maybe in the circumstances, maybe in other people, or maybe in you—even if you can't see it. Ask God to give you eyes of faith to see what he's up to and where he's at work. Ask him to give you patience as he works all things together for good (Romans 8:28).
