Day 389: Read today's devotional on Bible Gateway.

The Chosen Servant

Read Isaiah 42:1-9

"Look at my servant, whom I strengthen. He is my chosen one, who pleases me. I have put my Spirit upon him. He will bring justice to the nations. He will not shout or raise his voice in public. He will not crush the weakest reed or put out a flickering candle. He will bring justice to all who have been wronged. He will not falter or lose heart until justice prevails throughout the earth. Even distant lands beyond the sea will wait for his instruction."

God, the Lord, created the heavens and stretched them out. He created the earth and everything in it. He gives breath to everyone, life to everyone who walks the earth. And it is he who says, "I, the Lord, have called you to demonstrate my righteousness. I will take you by the hand and guard you, and I will give you to my people, Israel, as a symbol of my covenant with them. And you will be a light to guide the nations. You will open the eyes of the blind. You will free the captives from prison, releasing those who sit in dark dungeons."
(Isaiah 42:1-7)

Reflect

The first four verses of this passage were quoted in Matthew 12:18-21 in reference to Jesus. The chosen Servant is characterized by gentleness, encouragement, justice, and truth.

Part of Jesus' mission on earth was to demonstrate God's righteousness and to be a light for all nations. Through him, all people have the opportunity to share in his mission. God calls us to be servants of his Son, demonstrating God's righteousness and bringing his light. What a rare privilege it is to help the Messiah fulfill his mission! But we must seek his righteousness (Matthew 6:33) before we demonstrate it to others, and let his light shine in us before we can be lights ourselves (Matthew 5:14-16; 2 Corinthians 4:6).

Respond

Sometimes we don't share our faith because we feel too broken inside due to the crushing circumstances of life. Is that true for you? When you feel broken or burned out in your spiritual life, God won't step on you or toss you aside as useless, but will gently pick you up. Feeling discouraged? You can trust him today with the broken places in your life.
