How should we show love?

In order that the Christian imperative to love not dissipate into formless abstractions at the level of feeling or concept, we have illustrations of what the morally ideal person may do in the very concrete images of going the second mile, turning the other cheek, and not using others as the object of disdain or lust. We are directed to: "love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be the children of your Father which is in heaven. . . .Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect" (Matt. 5:44–48, kjv).
