(Habakkuk 2:3) ReflectSaddened by the violence and corruption he saw around him, Habakkuk poured his heart out to God (Habakkuk 1:2-4). This book records the prophet's questions for God: Why does God often seem indifferent in the face of evil? and Why do evil people seem to go unpunished? Habakkuk complained vigorously to God. While other prophetic books brought God's Word to people, this book brought people's questions to God. Like Habakkuk, Christians often feel angry and discouraged when they see what goes on in the world around them. Evil and injustice seem to have the upper hand. God's answer to Habakkuk is the same answer he would give us, "If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place." RespondIt isn't easy to be patient, but it helps to remember that God hates sin even more than we do. He will certainly punish sin. As God told Habakkuk, "Wait patiently." We cannot see all that God is doing, and we cannot know all that God will do. But we can be assured that God will do what is right. We must trust God even when we don't understand events in our lives and why they happen. |
