The role of pastors

Christian leaders who are spokespeople for Christ—the "pastors," we are calling them here—are to be the teachers of the "nations." They are the ones who, by profession at least, have the knowledge that must be taught to meet desperate human need. Also, they have a social position that depends upon God, not upon human support and approval. Of course, every alternative teaching, from other religions to secular worldviews, that may offer itself to this task must be seriously considered. We should do our best to identify such alternatives and to be thorough and honest in examining what they teach and practice. True spokes people for Christ need no special advantage and seek none. It is once again—but now on the worldwide stage that comes with "globalization"—a question of the God who answers "by fire" (1 Kings 18:24). Let everyone and everything on the world stage be exactly what it is. Let all voices be fairly heard. "Their rock is not like our Rock, even our enemies themselves judge this" (Deut. 32:31, NASB) was the ancient testimony, and we cannot do better.
