Day 445: Read today's devotional on Bible Gateway. A Hymn of Praise to the CreatorThe Lord made the earth by his power, and he preserves it by his wisdom. With his own understanding he stretched out the heavens. When he speaks in the thunder, the heavens roar with rain. He causes the clouds to rise over the earth. He sends the lightning with the rain and releases the wind from his storehouses. The whole human race is foolish and has no knowledge! The craftsmen are disgraced by the idols they make, for their carefully shaped works are a fraud. These idols have no breath or power. Idols are worthless; they are ridiculous lies! On the day of reckoning they will all be destroyed. But the God of Israel is no idol! He is the Creator of everything that exists, including his people, his own special possession. The Lord of Heaven's Armies is his name! (Jeremiah 51:15-19) ReflectThis anthem of praise affirms the Lord's uniqueness and majesty. It contrasts the reality of the one true God with the emptiness of idols. As the Creator and Preserver of all things, God made everything that exists and sustains the whole natural order. It is therefore foolish to trust in other "gods" because nothing and no one can compare with the Lord. At best they are created things. At worst, they are figments of human imagination. It is easy to think that the things we see and touch will bring us more security than God. But created thing will rust, rot, decay or burn out. God is eternal. RespondWe should not trust in things that break down. We should trust in God alone. This is the path of wisdom. |
