Allowing faith to coexist with death experiences—everyday setbacks and disappointments, grief, pain, and hurt—is important because sometimes we try to use faith to avoid them when God is asking us to use faith to deal with them. If you think every bad thing that happens is because you didn't have enough faith, you're going to spend a lot of time feeling ashamed and condemned. Plus, what we are suffering from or what we have lost is only part of our story. Faith in God allows us to see difficult situations in their wider context: they are just one part of a complex, long, layered, beautiful life. |

Ascension Day is the 40th day of Easter when we commemorate Jesus' ascent into heaven. While it's common to picture Jesus' resurrection at Easter as the final major event in his earthly ministry, his ascent is important too. Not just because it marks Jesus' physical departure from Earth, but because during it Jesus issued a famous command that his followers try to pursue even today, thousands of years later: "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation." |

How do some people seem to be prepared to endure suffering for Christ? When I was a child, our church celebrated global missions with an annual conference. Every year we heard about someone suffering for the gospel. The stories were not only uplifting but challenging. Would I be willing to endure the same? I sometimes asked myself. I also heard stories from Foxe's Book of Martyrs, which put suffering on the top tier of Christian experiences. As a college student I learned the stories of Dietrich Bonhoeffer under Hitler and Nelson Mandela under South African apartheid. Some are prepared because they have learned such stories and have witnessed suffering for the gospel. Suffering for Jesus was the way of the church in the earliest decades (and centuries). |
