Day 144: Read today's devotional on Bible Gateway.

Heart, Soul, and Strength

Read Deuteronomy 6:1-25

"Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates."
(Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

Reflect

This passage provides the central theme of Deuteronomy: Love God. It sets a pattern that helps us connect the Word of God to our daily lives. All God's commandments should be interpreted by how they can help us to better love God and others. We are to love God, think constantly about his commandments, teach his commandments to our children, and live each day by the guidelines in his Word.

God emphasized the importance of parents' teaching his Word to their children. The Hebrews were extremely successful at making religion an integral part of life. For them, religious education was life-oriented, not information-oriented. They used daily life to teach their children about God. The key to teaching your children to love God is stated simply and clearly in these verses. If you want your children to follow God, you must make God a part of your everyday experiences. Eternal truths are most effectively learned in the loving environment of a God-fearing home.

Respond

Ask God to help you teach your children to see him in all aspects of life, not just those that are "religious." The best way you can begin to teach your children to love God is by loving God in your own life first. Everything you do will come from that, and your children will pick up many of their habits from your own life.
