Day 568: Read today's devotional on Bible Gateway.

A Little Yeast

Read Matthew 13:33

Jesus also used this illustration: "The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough."
(Matthew 13:33)

Reflect

Yeast is typically used as a symbol of evil or uncleanness in the Bible, but here it is a positive symbol of growth. Although yeast seems like a minor ingredient, it permeates a whole loaf of bread. Although the Kingdom began small and was nearly invisible, it would soon grow and have a great impact on the world.

Likewise, it's easy today to believe that God is absent because we cannot see him at work in our world. But remember—God's work is sometimes subtle and quiet. Big change isn't always visible change. Sometimes the most important work we will do will be under the surface. But when it happens, everything after that changes.

Respond

If you're working hard to bring about good change, be encouraged in the fact that yeast is subtle. Sometimes deep changes are happening even when the bread looks the same.
