Overcoming the Negative Effects of Competition as the Highest GoodWhere is the blessing of God to be found in the level of human competition that breeds so much avarice, ruthlessness, and contempt that the entire global economy teeters as a result? We need well-trained, well-versed, moral, and ethical Christian economists to guide and direct the cooperative nature of healthy, progressive, innovative, and virtuous marketplaces. When enveloped in a larger ethos of mutually benefiting relationships, competition can manifest a form of cooperation that leads toward increasing levels of excellence. Again, competition, capitalism, and free-market economies must all be subordinate to an overarching ethic of general welfare, common flourishing, and moral courage that stands above our theories and policies. Our leaders must shepherd us toward the Psalm 23 perspective of life. Attaining a life without want and deprivation requires us to rethink our contemporary assumptions and their far-reaching connections to what have become somewhat sacrosanct political and economic dogmas that tend to blind us to their full effects.
