Day 263: Read today's devotional on Bible Gateway. David's Prayer of Praise[Then David prayed,] "O Lord, the God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes. Give my son Solomon the wholehearted desire to obey all your commands, laws, and decrees, and to do everything necessary to build this Temple, for which I have made these preparations." (1 Chronicles 29:18-19) ReflectDavid prayed for Solomon that he would have a "wholehearted desire to obey all [God's] commands." A "wholehearted desire" means being entirely dedicated to God. David prayed that Solomon would desire, above all else, to serve God. David knew it takes more than willpower to choose to love God. He prayed that God would make all Israel want to obey, that God would "see to it" that their love for God never changed. David understood how hard it is to focus our love upon our God. Even though he deserves it, even though it's right and good, we have a hard time loving God, and then obeying him. Do you find it hard to follow what God wants, or is it harder to desire to do it? Only God can work at the heart level to give you a wholehearted desire. If you are in Christ, God's Spirit is already working in you. "For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him" (Philippians 2:13). RespondRight action springs from right desires. Ask God to give you a right heart. And like David, pray that God would change the hearts of those around you. |
