A Prayer of HumilityThen King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed, "Whom am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great, O Lord God!"
(1 Chronicles 17:16-17) ReflectDavid prayed by humbling himself, praising God, recognizing God's blessings, and accepting God's decisions, promises, and commands. Humility is not about devaluing your worth. It's about seeing yourself in the big picture, in light of how big God is. "God sits above the circle of the earth. The people below seem like grasshoppers to him!" (Isaiah 40:22). When you see God's immensity, praising him is easy, and thanking him for his blessings is hard to stop. He cares about you, a small grasshopper. And he gives you everything that is good (James 1:17). When we see ourselves and then see God and his goodness to us, obedience is a simple response of gratefulness. We often reduce prayer to making requests of God and listing our troubles, but these other dimensions of prayer can deepen our relationship with God—humility, praise, thanks, and obedience. Take time to recognize your smallness. RespondPraise God, and reflect on his blessings. Recommit yourself to obey what he has already made clear to you. |
